The esoteric reading Bailey teaches puts Mars as esoteric ruler of Scorpio, the disciple's wars and the nine tests, with the line "Warrior I am, and from the battle I emerge triumphant." That is this placement exactly. The battle is internal, it is survivable, and it is the point.
