You keep meeting people who need saving. You have never asked why the job keeps finding you.

## What it looks like in a life

Neptune occupies a sign for about fourteen years, so the sign belongs to a generation. The opposition to your Mars is what makes it personal. You swing between long stretches of drive and stretches where nothing will start. You attract the charming and the unreliable: the addict, the artist, the one with the story, and you give far past the point of sense. Direct confrontation is hard, so you either go quiet and hold it or you finally erupt and then apologize for a month. You have been deceived. You have also let yourself be deceived, because the truth would have required a fight.

## The gift

Oppositions show you yourself in other people. You have watched your own escapism from the outside, close up, in someone you loved, and most people never get that education. You can be strong without being hard. Once you stop taking the whole weight, you become someone who can stay with a person in real trouble without dissolving into their trouble.

## The friction

You hand whichever end you are not holding to somebody else. When you are the strong one, the person across from you gets weaker. When you are the lost one, you find someone hard enough to carry you and then resent the carrying. The rescue looks like love. Underneath it is a way of never having to want anything for yourself out loud.

## The esoteric layer

The opposition is half the circle, the number two, and Hellenistic astrology read it as the sharpest confrontation on the wheel. It called Mars the lesser malefic. It said nothing about Neptune, which was not discovered until 1846. The esoteric reading in Bailey's lineage is full-Moon logic: the two ends stay in tension until a third point reconciles them. Neptune there is sacred and devotional, the dissolving of the separate self. The reconciliation is not choosing strength or surrender. It is willing something on your own behalf and staying soft while you do it.
