In the Hellenistic system Mercury both rules and is exalted in Virgo, the only planet exalted in its own domicile, and Venus is in fall there. Saturn carries no formal dignity but works comfortably, because the sign already runs on discipline and discrimination. Virgo is the Babylonian Furrow, the grain goddess holding the ear of wheat. Bailey's esoteric astrology calls it matter as the mother of the Christ principle, the soul gestating inside form, with the keynote "I am the Mother and the Child." The critic is meant to become the midwife.
